Bistek and broccoli 

No, I did not sneeze and accidentally slam my keyboard and misspell “beef”. This is pretty much beef and broccoli, but with bistek-flavored beef instead of the usual oyster sauce/sugar/soy combo.

What is bistek? It’s one of my favorite Filipino dishes because it’s super easy to make. Beef is marinated and cooked in a soy sauce and lemon juice mixture and served with rice. If you haven’t had a soy sauce/lemon/beef dish yet you are missing out on life, my friend.

You will need:

  • 1 pound flank steak
  • 1 head of broccoli
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 1 lemon, juiced
  • 3 garlic cloves, grated
  • onion
  • pepper
  • 1 teaspoon corn starch
  • water

First, mix the juice of one whole lemon with soy sauce, garlic, and fresh ground pepper.

Once the beef goes in the pan it will cook very quickly, so get your broccoli cooking first. Cut the broccoli into small florets and heat some vegetable oil in a large skillet. Add your broccoli and cook until it’s just barely done.

Slice the beef into very thin slices against the grain. This keeps your beef from getting tough! Add the beef into the bowl with your sauce, toss well and let it marinate for about 20 minutes.

Slice some onions and add them to your beef mixture. Heat some vegetable oil in the pan and wait until it is crazy hot, then carefully add the beef. You want to leave some space in the pan or your beef will steam and get gross, so do this in batches.

Also, if ya’ll didn’t know already, chopsticks are the best cooking utensil out there.

You’ll only need to cook the beef for a few minutes. Try not to move the beef until it’s gotten a nice sear. Once all your beef is done, add the broccoli and previously cooked beef back to the pan.

Make a slurry with the corn starch and about 3/4 cup of water, and add this to your pan to coat everything in a glaze-y sauce. Cook that mixture for another 5 minutes, tossing or stirring frequently.

Serve over rice and enjoy!
