One of my favorite appetizers at any Japanese restaurant is seared Ahi tuna salad. The salad has a light and tangy dressing, and the tuna has a nice toasted sesame exterior.
This is perfect for when you want a lighter meal or snack, and since you’re just searing the tuna, it takes minutes to whip up!
You will need:
- 1/2 pound Ahi tuna, sashimi grade
- Sesame seeds
- Mixed greens
- Cucumber
- 1/2 tablespoon sesame oil
- 1 tablespoon soy sauce
- 1 tablespoon rice wine vinegar
- Canola oil
Pour sesame seeds on to a large plate. Cover all sides of the tuna in seeds and set aside.
Heat up one tablespoon of canola oil in a pan over high heat. You want to use canola or grapeseed oil instead of olive – olive oil burns quicker.
Once your pan is smoking hot, use tongs to place the tuna in the pan. Sear on each side for about one minute and set aside to rest and cool. Once it’s cool enough to handle, slice the seared tuna into pieces about 1/2 inch thick.
Whisk together the soy sauce and rice wine vinegar, then whisk the sesame oil in. Place mixed greens and sliced cucumbers in the bowl and toss altogether.
Transfer your salad to a plate and lay the sliced tuna on top. Enjoy!
